Ernakulam district is one of the most popular destinations of visit in Kerala. The district includes the biggest metropolitan region of the state Kochi. Ernakulam is the highest revenue yielding district within the state and is also known as the Commercial capital of Kerala. Additionally known among numerous international and domestic tourists in Kerala state, it also hosts them. Ernakulam became India's first 'fully literate district' in 1990 and therefore the country's only district having 100% banking or full 'meaningful financial inclusion' in 2012.

Nowadays Kochi includes Ernakulam city, old parts of Kochi, Kumbalangi, and other islands. Kochi is popularly referred to as the Queen of Arabian Sea, flaunts one amongst the best natural harbours of the world. It was the centre of the world spice trade for several centuries. It is built facing the backwaters, and is a popular hangout for the local populace and is also an economically thriving part of the city of Kochi, Fort Kochi- situated on the Mattancherry peninsula, is the historical part of the city and home to many tourist attractions, such as the cantilevered Chinese fishing nets, the Mattancherry Palace and the Santa Cruz Basilica, Hill Palace- the largest archaeological museum in Kerala, near Tripunithura.

One of the prime destinations in spiritual tourism Kalady is village placed east of the Periyar river in the Ernakulam district. It's the birthplace of Sri Adi Shankara a well known preacher, philosopher and a famous pilgrim centre. Kalady found its place in the spiritual map of india when it was rediscovered in the late nineteenth century by the Shankaracharya of Sringeri and later on consecrated a temple for Sri Adi Shankara in 1910. Temples dedicated to Sri Sankara, Sarada Devi, Sri Krishna and Sri Ramakrishna adds to the sanctity of the place. Another place of visit in Kalady is the crocodile ghat which is believed to the place where Sri Sankara took his vows of renunciation. According to the legends, a crocodile caught hold of him and refused to unleash him till Sankara's mother Aryamba permitted him to accept Sanyas (renunciation).
