Periyar Tiger Reserve
The Periyar lake is at the centre of this national park. The area around it was declared a reserve forest in 1899 and then, as Nelikkampetty sanctuary in 1934 and renamed as Periyar wildlife sanctuary in 1950 and became a national park in 1982. Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Barking deer, Lion tailed Macaque et all are other important mammals.
Over 1965 flowering plants including 171 grass species 143 species of orchids. The only south Indian conifer Podocarpus wallichianus grows in the forests of Periyar Tiger Reserve.
Around 35 species of mammals are found here which include the Asian elephant, Tiger, Indian bison, sambar deer, Indian wild dog, Leopard, Barking deer, Smooth-coated otter which can be sighted during a boat cruise in the Periyar Lake.
